Why is India (as a culture) opposed to Christianity and Islam?

I am an Indian and a Christian by birth.

I studied at a school run by jesuits and lived within the confines of the staff quarters of a hospital run by missionaries (where my father used to work).

All through my childhood I was ignorant of the underlying resistance that the masses had towards Christians and Muslims.

It was in my late teens that I was exposed to the harsh reality of belonging to the Christian community in India.

Many people looked down upon me with disdain and used to say stuff like — Christians drink wine during their mass, even their christmas cakes have rum in them, they don’t have any scruples etc. etc.

As an adult I used to be completely against Hindus and Hinduism due to the perception they held about the Christian community; however, with age came understanding and maturity and now, in my forties, I have come to realise the reason for their resistance.

  1. Age matters — Firstly, Hinduism is an approximately 5000 year old religion whereas Christianity is 2000 years old and Islam arrived later than that. Hence, for Hindus, the credibility of their beliefs is older and hence more established.
  2. No. Of Gods — Christianity is henotheistic and Islam is a monotheistic religion whereas Hinduism happens to be a polytheistic religion where you believe in a number of Gods and Goddesses. Hence, Hinduism happens to be more flexible as compared to the orthodoxy of the others. In other words, a Hindu would not have a problem praying at a Church or Mosque to the Christian/Muslim God; however, you would not catch a Christian or Muslim praying at a place of worship different than theirs or worshipping a different God! This is not acceptable to Hindus who find this orthodoxy unacceptable when they themselves are flexible. You could also note the same with Sikhism wherein the Sikhs are flexible to accept and worship different religions and are hence more accepted by the Hindu culture and its followers.
  3. History — India was a country that was invaded by the Muslims (Babar and his offspring) and later on was taken over (on the sly) by the British (who were Christians). I am sure that both these groups must have converted or at least attempted to convert the Hindus to their religion by force, by playing on the greed of the masses, by providing various amenities like social position — education — land and perhaps by fear! Added to that, they also abused our country by enslaving us and sucking the blood of our land and our culture dry!?
  4. Eating Habits — Hinduism encourages vegetarianism and is against the eating of flesh unlike Christianity and Islam: which is a another major factor that leads to the disparity amongst these religions.

Based on the above points, if I were a Hindu, I would myself have been against Christianity and Islam because of the differences in the fundamentals of the other religions!

I, for one, can comment freely about the so-called Christians who for purely political and financial reasons maligned and abused the name of Christ by their actions and deeds (the crusades are a very good illustration of the same).

And if the Christians were guilty of using the name of Christ for achieving their political and financial aspirations — do I have any right to blame others who do the same (using the name of their God for their political and financial gains) in India?!

I am not in a position to judge or condemn them because, as Jesus had told the crowd who were about to stone the woman accused of adultery — the one who is without sin should throw the first stone!

I know I can’t!
